Samsung Electronics announced its 2025 OLED TV range, with three different series. The TVs use a combination of SDC's QD-OLED panels (latest generation that reaches 4,000 nits) and LGD's OLEDs.

The top of the range is the S95F, Samsung's flagship 2025 TV, that will be available in 55", 65", 77" and 83" sizes. The S95F offers 4K 165hzQD-OLED panels (except the 83-inch model which uses LG's WOLEDs, apparently). The S95F TVs use Samsung's new NQ4 AI Gen3 video processor.

LG Electronics officially launched its 2025 OLED TV range, with 4 different series. The higher-end G5 and M5 models adopt a new WOLED panel design that increases the number of stacks to 4 (previous models used 3 stacks) which increases brightness and efficiency. Interestingly, none of these TVs use a microLens array (MLA).

So LG's OLED M5 is the company's flagship wireless 4K 144Hz OLED for 2025. The M5 will be offered in 65", 77", 83" and 97" sizes. The OLED G5 is the second top-of-the-line TV, with 4K 165Hz panels (144Hz on the 48-inch and 97-inch models), offered in a wide range of sizes (48", 55", 65", 77", 83" and 97").

UBI Research estimates that the volume of OLED emitting materials purchased in Q3 2024 reached 32.7 tons, which is the highest ever, with the previous record in 2021. UBI expects 2024 as a whole to be the record year in OLED emitter material shipments.

In terms of customers, SDC holds the largest share with 41.4% of the total market, followed by LGD (20.5%), BOE (11.6%) and Visionox (8.3%). In terms of architecture, 83.7% of all emitter materials went into RGB OLEDs, 11.3% into WOLED (LG's WRGB) panels and 2.8% into QD-OLED panels.

LG Display announced that the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has adopted its “color perception difference measurement method” as an international standard. According to the new standard, LG Display’s large-sized OLED panels have high color accuracy, with a color perception difference of only about 10%, the lowest in the industry.

LG Display explains that in this context, differences in color perception refer to a phenomenon in which different viewers perceive the same color differently when it is shown on a display, resulting in color distortion. It is mainly caused by viewers’ visual characteristics, but the difference can be greater depending on the type of display. For example, the same white color can be perceived by different viewers to have either a blue or yellow tone.

LG Display announced that its entire lineup of OLED TV and monitor panels, from 27 to 97 inches (all of its WOLED panels), have become the world’s first displays to receive Eyesafe Circadian Certification. LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels achieved the highest circadian certification rating (CPF 50).

EyeSafe, a US-based company specializing in blue light mitigation solutions, says that LG's OLED panels are promoting eye health and better sleep, as the emit just 36% blue light, the lowest in the industry.

LG Display announced that it has started to mass produce its 26.5-inch 480Hz QHD (2560x1440) Gaming OLED panel. This is the world's first 480hz OLED panel, and it offers a 0.02 ms response time, and it is equipped with LG's MLA technology to ehance the light output.

A few weeks ago Acer announced its Predator X27U F3 monitor, that is based on LG's 480Hz OLED, and it's likely that this monitor will start shipping soon.

Since Samsung started mass producing AMOLED displays in 2007, most people believe that the company is not only the leader in OLED production capacity, but also in the performance of its displays. In most cases, Samsung has been the first company to develop and manage to mass produce the most advanced OLED displays, and the first to adopt the latest OLED materials, architectures, and processes.

There are some signs that this could be changing, although honestly it's a bit too early to know. In May 2024, Apple launched its first OLED Tablets, and according to reports, Apple chose LG Display as its main supplier, ordering around 60% of its iPad OLEDs from LGD (with all of the 13" model orders going to LG), and the rest from Samsung. Later it was reported that Apple had to delay the introduction of its 2024 iPad Pro devices as Samsung faced low production yields and could not deliver displays in time.

Germany-based Loewe announced that it has established its own OLED TV assembly line, at its headquarters in Kronach, Germany. The new facility is said to be based on a 'radically designed' production process, and it is staffed by around 200 employees. The line will begin full-scale production by the end of May.

Loewe revealed that it is buying 'open-cell' WOLED panels from LG Display - and this is the first production line in Europe that can work with such panels (as opposed to complete OLED modules used in all other EU-based lines). Working with open-cell panels enables Loewe to have more control over the process and the design of its premium TVs.

According to a new report in Korea, LG Display aims to increase its OLED TV panel shipments to Samsung Electronics in 2024, and to reach almost 1 million units. 

Samsung has recently signed a five-year OLED TV panel supply agreement with LG Display, as the two Korean companies are increasing their collaboration to fend off competition from China. 

According to reports from Korea, LG Display requested Samsung Electronics to use its WOLED panels on the same tier as SDC's QD-OLED panels, and Samsung will use both panel technologies in its S90D OLED TV series. Samsung will likely not disclose the actual panel technology to the consumer, and will likely decide on the panel technology per region.

The Samsung S90D will offer 42-, 48-, 55-, 65-, 77- and 83-inch panels. SDC only makes 55, 65, and 77-inch QD-OLED panels, and so in these sizes both QD-OLEDs and WOLEDs will be used. For the 42-, 48- and 83- models Samsung will only use WOLEDs.
