According to a report from Korea, Samsung Display started producing OLED display modules at its new plant in India's Noida city Uttar Pradesh state.
The modules that will be produced at Noida will be supplied to Samsung Electronics, to be used in smartphones sold in India.
Korea-based OLUM Material announced a new FMM technology for OLED production, which the company refers to as Unit-Cell FMM, which enables high-efficiency deposition (and patterning) of evaporated OLED materials.
The basic idea is to use a small FMM unit in front of every display panel, rather than a large FMM in front of the entire substrate. A large mask is useful for very fast production, but the large masks tend to sag and deform and so FMM production is limited in size.
JOLED announced that it has started to mass produce OLEDs at its new 5.5-Gen production line in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. JOLED brands its new displays as OLEDIO displays. JOLED plans to produce 10- to 32-inch displays, targeting applications such as high-end monitors, automotive displays and medical monitors.
JOLED also branded its production technology, based on ink-jet printing, as TRIPRINT.
DSCC says that flexible OLED fab utilization has been low since the beginning of 2021, and this will remain so for the next quarter as well. Utilization at rigid OLED lines is higher. This has been the pattern in previous years - lower production in the first half of the year and higher volumes at the second half of the year.
LG's OLED TV fab utilization has been historically very high (and close to 100%) - until 2020 which have seen lower utilization due the ramp-up at the Guangzhou fab. But in 2021 LG has managed to increase its yields again.
In August 2019 China-based Tianma announced plans for a 6-Gen flexible AMOLED line in Xiamen, China. Total investment in the new fab is estimated at $6.8 billion USD and the monthly capacity will be 48,000 6-Gen substrates. The company's initial plan was to start production at the new fab was to begin in February 2022.
According to a new report from China, Tianma finished the construction of the main building of the new fab, 50 days ahead of schedule.
The Elec reports that Samsung Display is planning to build a production line for notebook OLEDs, at its A4 factory in Asan, Korea. The Gen-6 production line will have a capacity of 30,000 monthly substrates.
SDC plans to start ordering production equipment in the summer of 2021, which means that the equipment will be installed within the year, or in early 2022. SDC is already producing laptop displays, so it expects the ramp up to be relatively quick.
A new report from China suggests that BOE finally managed to enter Apple's supply chain for its iPhone devices. Only last month it was reported that BOE did not pass Apple's OLED quality test.
According to the report BOE will start supplying AMOLED displays to Apple before the end of 2020. In 2021, BOE will ship 10 million AMOLED displays to Apple. LGD will supply 40 million panels while Samsung will supply 130 million panels.
According to reports from Korea, Tianma plans to ship 40 million OLED panels in 2021. It is estimated that Tianma shipped a million panels in 2020, which means that this is quite an aggressive sales expansion for the Chinese display maker, and according to the report analysts expect the company to actually ship only around 7.5 million panels.
Tianma produces rigid OLEDs at its 5.5-Gen line in Shanghai, and in 2017 Tianma started producing rigid and flexible OLEDS at the company's 6-Gen fab in Wuhan. Later in 2018 the company announced plans to expand its Wuhan flexible AMOLED fab. This expansion plan was reportedly delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
According to reports from Korea, Visionox has started production at its M4 flexible OLED module line in Guangzhou.
Earlier this month Visionox announced that it lighted up its 6-Gen flexible OLED production line in Hefei, Anhui, China. The company is quickly ramping up its production capacity and is also planning a fourth panel production line in Chengdu.
