Samsung Display says that it managed to increase its QD-OLED production yields to around 85% (up from 75% in April). The company plans to introduce new technologies and processes that will enable it to increase its production capacity from 30,000 monthly substrates to almost 40,000 at the same production line.

Samsung Display will so increase its QD-OLED production capacity by 30%. The main step to achieve this is the reduction of TAKT time (the time it takes to produce one panel).

Samsung Display's CEO Choi Joo-sun says that the company sees a great potential for OLED displays in the IT market (mainly notebook and monitor displays), and that Samsung is building a new 8-Gen (2200x2500 mm) production line which will begin production in 2024. The glass efficiency at 8-Gen (uncut glass) will be 20% higher compared to Samsung's 6-Gen lines.

This new fab was already reported last year, but this is the first time we officially hear a commitment from SDC. According to DSCC, there are over 10 8.5-Gen OLED lines under consideration now in the industry, as demand for OLED panels for laptops, tablets and monitors is o the rise. Samsung is the current leader in OLED IT displays.

According to a report from Korea, LG Display and SK Hynix has agreed to collaborate on OLED microdisplay development and production. The two companies are at the final stage of negotiations.

If this goes through, SK Hynix will produce the backplane silicon wafers, while LG Display will handle the OLED frontplane deposition and encapsulation.

As Sichuan province in China suffers from a record heat wave, and the local authorities announces power rationing, limiting power supply to factories in the area.

BOE has two 6-Gen OLED production lines in Sichuan (the B7 line in Chengdu which started operation in 2017, and the line in Mianyang). The company says that it will have to "make adjustments" to its operations in both lines, but it does not expect any major impact on its operations.

LG Display's VP Kang Won-Seok says that the company is working on several new panels and technologies, which it plans to announce soon.

First up is a 20-inch OLED, for applications in personal devices. This panel will be demonstrated before the end of the year. It is not clear whether LGD will adopt its WOLED technology or its RGB technology for such panels.

Following strong demand for IT devices, and Samsung's success in the OLED laptop market, OLED makers have began to plan building new OLED production lines specifically for IT applications: laptops, tablets and monitors.

Several OLED makers, including Samsung, LG and BOE, are considering building 8.5-Gen production lines for this market. In fact DSCC estimated that there are 11 such lines under development right now. But it turns out that this is not so simple as designing the evaporation equipment for larger substrates is a challenge.

According to reports from Korea, supply chain issues are slowing down LG Display's OLED production expansion plans, and key components cannot be secured.

According to the report, the delivery times of some components have more than doubled, and Korean equipment makers cannot produce and supply the production systems that LGD requires. Only 9% of components used in equipment makers in Korea are produced in Korea.

TCL (CSoT) announced that the company has finalized the development of several new OLED technologies, which has been deployed at the company's production lines.

The first technology is LTPO, or Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, an OLED backplane technology developed originally by Apple. LTPO enables variable refresh rates, and TCL's technology can support a wide range of frequencies, from 1Hz to 144Hz.

OLED microdisplay developer BCDTEK is embarking on a new project to construct a 12-inch OLED microdisplay production site in Huainan, China. The new fab will have a production capacity of 20,000 monthly substrates.

The total investment in this new fab will reach 6.5 billion yuan (around $970 million USD), with the first phase (4,000 substrates per month) estimated at $210 million USD (1.5 billion Yuan). The company has raised funds from China Micro Semiconductor and Shanghai Wusheng Electronics. 

At SID Displayweek 2022, BOE demonstrated a 95" 8K OLED TV display prototype. This was an impressive display, and reports suggested that BOE is considering to start producing such panels commercially.

According to a new report from Korea, BOE has indeed decided to initiate production of OLED TV panels. BOE plans to produce 300,000 panels in 2022, in sizes ranging from 55-inch to 95-inch.
