UBI: Samsung to increase its QD-OLED capacity by 50% by 2024

UBI Research says that Samsung Display has decided to increase its QD-OLED production capacity, from 30,000 monthly substrate to 45,000 - that's a 50% increase - by 2024.

UBI also says that Samsung has updated its QD-OLED material stack (now called QM2), with an upgraded ETL green layer, and has started to recycle the waste materials in its production process.

ETNews: Apple signs contracts to develop tablet and laptop OLEDs, gets ready for the first OLED iPad in 2024

Korea-based ETNews reports that Apple has finally committed to adopt OLED displays in future tablets and laptops, and the company has signed a contact with a "local OLED developer" (which means either Samsung Display or LG Dispaly) to develop four different OLED displays.

According to the report, Apple decided to adopt a 10.86" and 12.9" AMOLED displays for future iPad devices, and 14" and 16" displays for future MacBooks. The first OLED iPad will be released in 2024, while the first OLED MacBook will come later in 2026.

Omdia: Samsung to increase QD-OLED TV panel shipments in 2023, LGD to lose OLED TV market share

Omdia posted an interesting market analysis, saying that Samsung Display is looking to increase its OLED TV market share, and will push QD-OLED TV shipments strong in 2023. SDC will increase shipments by 141% in 2023, and will continue to increase production.

Samsung's production increase will be met by an increased number of suppliers - not just Samsung and Sony as in 2022, but other companies will start offering QD-OLED TVs (Philips, TCL and Sharp).

Reports suggest Chinese OLED makers are slowing down their capacity expansion plans as fab utilization is low

Reports from Korea suggest that China-based OLED makers have seen lower utilization rates, as demand for OLED displays is smaller than expected, which is leading the companies to slow down their capacity expansion plans.

The capacity of all China-based OLED makers have risen from 20% of the global OLED market in 2019, to around 40% in 2022. But growth ahead will be slower, and by 2027, the market share of China-based makers will reach 45% of the global market. This data is from DSCC.

Report: Samsung and HP to launch foldable OLED laptops in 2023, low demand for current such devices

The Elec reports that Samsung Electronics is set to launch a foldable OLED laptop next year, using a 17.3" AMOLED display produced by Samsung Display. HP is also gearing up to release its first foldabl OLED, with a 17-inch display produced by LG Display.

Foldable OLED laptops are exciting, but current prices are very high, and so demand is low. The Asus ZenBook 17 Fold OLED for example, which uses a 17.3-inch display made by BOE, costs $3,500 - a very high price for a laptop. It is reported that Asus only ordered 10,000 displays from BOE as it understand it cannot ship many units at this price, and HP also not planning for many sales of their own first-gen foldable laptops, and have ordered a similar number of displays.
